Harness verses neck coller

I'm thinking of purchasing a harness leash for Tundra. Any suggestions? Anyone?

I have a pinch collar for obedience training as well as a chock chain. Tundra never really needed the pinch collar as much as she needed the chock chain. Now that she's older and better at walking I'm thinking that perhaps a "Dog Whisperer" advice of having a harness is better for their neck.

Our breeder says that wolves have a lot of muscle in their necks so you don't do any long term damage but I can only image that a harness is better and easier on them.

Any advice?

  1. I don't know how true this is, but have been told that the higher up on a canine's neck a collar is, the more effective it is. When it's low, I guess the pressure is more widely distributed. Whereas when it's high (closer to the chin) it's more concentrated. She looks big! How much does she weigh?

  2. harnesses encourage pulling. i would never use one if the dog (in your case wolf hybrid) has pulling issues. you can try buying a dog backpack and throwing some water bottles in the back pack. this will give the dog a "job" and tire the dog out. as for correction collars...theyre great when you know how to use them. we use both pinch and choke collars but the pinch is the better obedience tool. the pinch should never be loose. it needs to be high on the neck, under the chin or jaw. if your pinch is big enough to throw over your dogs head, its too big! you can take out some links out and make the pinch fit properly. the correction should always be a fast, and firm jerk. do not pull on the pinch. it does nothing. as soon as dog does something undesired, make a fast, firm, strong jerk movement. try watching some vids about how to use pinch collars...or youtube schutzhund trainers use chokes and pinch collars.

dont worry about your hybrids neck. if a german shepherd can handle intense schutzhund with multiple pinch collars at once, a wolf hybrid can handle a pinch as well.
